๐จ๐ฆ How to get a job in Canada as a South African
Jobs in Canada for South Africans: Express Entry, provincial nominations and LMIA work permits, credential assessments, Job Bank and Canadian resumes.
Updated 5 October 2026
Canada is one of the few countries where a skilled South African can get permanent residence before having a job offer, which changes how you job hunt. Many Saffas land in Calgary, Toronto or Vancouver as permanent residents and look for work once they arrive, while others are recruited directly by Canadian employers. Either way, expect employers to value "Canadian experience" and Canadian-format applications. Here's how to approach jobs in Canada for South Africans.
Your right to work
South African citizens need a visitor visa (temporary resident visa) to visit Canada, as we're not eligible for an eTA. A visitor visa doesn't allow you to work. South Africa is also not one of the countries in International Experience Canada (IEC), Canada's working holiday programme, so that route isn't open on a South African passport. The main routes are:
- Express Entry: the points-based system for permanent residence, covering the Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class and Federal Skilled Trades programs. Candidates are ranked by their CRS score, and IRCC also runs category-based draws for occupations such as healthcare, trades and education.
- Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs): provinces nominate people for jobs they need filled. A nomination linked to Express Entry adds 600 CRS points, which is usually enough for an invitation.
- Employer-specific work permits: usually backed by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), where the employer shows no Canadian was available. LMIA rules have been tightened recently, particularly for lower-wage jobs, so check the current position.

Jobs in demand for South Africans
The categories IRCC targets in Express Entry, and the occupations provinces list in their nominee streams, are a good guide to demand. Lists change each year, so check the current ones, but roles where South Africans are often hired include:
- Registered nurses, doctors and other health professionals: healthcare and nursing jobs in Canada
- Electricians, welders, plumbers, carpenters and heavy-duty mechanics: trades and construction jobs
- Engineers, especially in Alberta's energy and resources sector: mining, energy and engineering jobs
- Teachers and early childhood educators: teaching jobs
- Software developers and other tech roles: IT jobs
- Truck drivers and other transport roles: logistics and transport jobs

Where to look
- Job Bank is the Government of Canada's job site. Employers applying for an LMIA normally have to advertise there, so it's a useful place to find employers open to hiring from abroad.
- LinkedIn and Indeed are the main private job sites. Set your location to the Canadian city you're targeting.
- Provincial health authorities (such as Alberta Health Services) and school boards recruit through their own careers pages.
- Recruitment agencies are active in health, engineering, trades and IT. Provinces and employers also run overseas recruitment events from time to time.
Getting your qualifications recognised
- Educational Credential Assessment (ECA): needed for Express Entry if your degree is from outside Canada. WES is the best-known designated organisation; check IRCC's list for the others.
- Language tests: even native English speakers need an approved test result (IELTS General Training or CELPIP), and it carries a lot of points.
- Nurses: start with the National Nursing Assessment Service (NNAS), then apply to the nursing regulator in the province where you want to work.
- Engineers: licensing is provincial, for example Professional Engineers Ontario, APEGA in Alberta, or Engineers and Geoscientists BC.
- Teachers: certified by each province, for example the Ontario College of Teachers.
- Accountants: CPA designations are granted by the provincial CPA bodies. Ask your provincial body whether there's a current recognition route for CA(SA).
- Trades: certification is provincial, and the Red Seal endorsement lets you work across provinces.
Regulated jobs (nursing, engineering, teaching, many trades) can't be done in Canada without the provincial licence, so start that process early.
CV and application tips for Canada
- A Canadian resume is usually two pages, with no photo, ID number, date of birth or marital status.
- Focus on achievements and use Canadian spelling and terms where you can. Convert rand figures and explain South African employers.
- Write a tailored cover letter for each role. Many Canadian employers still expect one.
- Add references only when asked, but have two or three ready. Canadian employers often check them.
- Employers value Canadian experience. Volunteering, contract roles and Canadian courses help build it once you arrive.
- Show your status clearly: "Permanent resident, arriving March" or "Express Entry profile, CRS 480, open to LMIA support".
Salary and cost reality
Salaries are generally much higher than in South Africa, but so are housing costs, especially in Toronto and Vancouver. Calgary and other cities in the Prairies are often cheaper. Provincial health insurance may have a waiting period of up to three months in some provinces, so buy private cover for the gap. Budget for winter clothes and several months of job hunting if you arrive without an offer.
Avoiding scams
- Fake job offers and "LMIA for sale" schemes are common. It's illegal for an employer to charge you for an LMIA or recover the cost from you.
- Paid immigration consultants must be licensed by the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants (CICC). Lawyers and Quebec notaries are also authorised. Check before you pay.
- IRCC communicates from official Government of Canada addresses and never asks for payment by gift card or crypto.
