๐ Work from home in South Africa for an overseas company
How to find genuine remote and online jobs with international employers, get paid in dollars, pounds or euros, handle tax, and keep working through load-shedding.
Updated 5 October 2026
You don't have to emigrate to earn an international salary. Thousands of companies in the US, UK, Europe and Australia hire people who live in South Africa for fully remote roles. Our time zone overlaps with Europe and the UK, and our English and work ethic are well regarded. Here's how to find those jobs, and how to avoid the scams.
Where the real remote jobs are
Our work from home jobs page collects remote roles that are open to people living in South Africa (or anywhere), from Himalayas, We Work Remotely, Remote OK, Remotive, Jobicy and Working Nomads, updated twice a day. The most common categories:
- IT & software: developers, QA, DevOps, data and cybersecurity
- Sales & marketing: SDRs, account executives, SEO, content and social media
- Admin & customer support: virtual assistants, customer success and support agents
- Finance & accounting: bookkeepers, accountants and analysts (SA's CA(SA) is highly regarded)
- Online teaching & tutoring
Watch the location line on each advert. "Worldwide", "Anywhere", "EMEA" and "Africa" usually include South Africa; "US only" or "UK only" don't.
How to spot a work-from-home scam
- A real employer never asks you to pay for training, a "starter kit", software, equipment or a background check.
- Be wary of interviews held only over WhatsApp or Telegram, or job offers made without a proper interview.
- "Data capturing from home" with no experience needed, guaranteed earnings, or anything that asks you to receive and forward money or parcels, is almost always a scam.
- Check the company has a real website and LinkedIn presence, and that the email comes from the company's domain, not a Gmail address.
Contractor or employee?
Most overseas companies hire South Africans as independent contractors, or through an "employer of record" (EOR) service that employs you locally on the company's behalf. Contractors invoice monthly and handle their own tax. EOR employees usually get payslips, leave and PAYE deducted, like a normal South African job.
Getting paid in foreign currency
- Popular options are international payment platforms, a foreign-currency (FCA) account at your South African bank, or the payment platform your client already uses. Compare the exchange-rate margin as well as the fees.
- Money coming into South Africa needs a reason: your bank may ask you to confirm it's income for services ("export of services").
Tax
If you live in South Africa, you're a tax resident, and income from foreign clients is taxable here. Register for provisional tax with SARS if you earn as a contractor, and keep your invoices. The foreign employment income exemption only applies to time spent working outside South Africa, so it doesn't apply when you work from home here. See our SARS guide, and speak to a tax practitioner.
Keep working through load-shedding
- A UPS or small inverter for your router and fibre ONT keeps you online for a few hours. A laptop plus a power bank covers short outages.
- Keep mobile data (or a second LTE/5G router) as a backup connection.
- Tell employers you have backup power and internet. It's often their first worry about hiring in South Africa.
