๐ณ๏ธ How to vote in South African elections from overseas
Registering, notifying the IEC and voting at an embassy or consulate in national elections.
Updated 4 October 2026
South African citizens living abroad can vote in national elections at SA embassies, high commissions and consulates. You can't vote from abroad in municipal (local government) elections.
Step 1: Register
You must be on the voters' roll. You can check your status and register online at the Electoral Commission (IEC), including from abroad, whenever registration is open. Registration closes when an election is proclaimed, so don't leave it late.
Step 2: Tell the IEC you'll vote abroad
Before each election, voters abroad must submit a notification of intention to vote overseas (the VEC10 form), choosing the mission where they'll vote. This is done online during a window the IEC announces once the election date is set.
Step 3: Vote
Overseas voting takes place a few days before election day in South Africa. Take your green ID book, smart ID card, temporary ID certificate, and your valid South African passport.
